How To Write Your Training Journal

on Sep 30th 2007

Hey, I finally got the Paypal thing figured out as you can see. It was just sort of weird last night. It would say “Page cannot be found” and it would just take me to my Paypal homepage and show me my balance and transactions and what not. Then when I received your email, I tried it again and it was fine. Oh well, the important thing is it finally worked and I am currently reading through your book.

I just had a few questions as of right now. The thing I am wanting to get started most is my notebook. I just don’t know how to go about organizing it and maybe making charts for days or weeks or something, to write down workout information so I am not using page after page for two to three things. I was thinking something along the lines of having what I was working on such as triceps/biceps etc etc down the side with maybe the days and reps up on top or something. I’m just not too sure how to go about it and have it written out in the best most effective way, in your opinion. I just want to make sure I can log every single movement/event/change possible.

If you have any tips for this, or have a certain layout you like to recommend, that you be great.

Now I know you talk about supplements and what not here and there but I was wondering what your thoughts were on Muscle Milk? About three years ago when I had a trainer he recommended it and said he used it after every work out, and taking his word, so did I. I will base this next question on you approving of Muscle Milk. The instructions say to mix with water and it tastes very nasty and I just can’t stand it. I also don’t know where you stand with such things as milk or skim milk or anything like that but I decided to mix it with some skim milk, as I hear it’s the only type of milk you should drink, and to my surprise it tasted really good. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing so please let me know how you feel about all things listed above, and of course if you have better suggestions, I’m all ears.

This is the last question, I promise. In an email I received it said to always put “&&&&” in the subject bar. Now should I always just put that or should I put something along the lines of “&&&&& - question about &&&” or something? You know just to give you an idea as to what you’re going to be reading.

Thanks for everything and I can’t wait to get started.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, I am glad to seen that you are so keen to paying attention to detail. It will pay off later but let me tell you this first: You cannot hit a target without ever pulling the trigger.

The reason I say that is because a lot of people get bogged down with the details that only make a little difference instead of taking action on the major things that really have a pay off.

Now for your answer: I’ve tried training logs, I’ve tried spreadsheets and you know what I keep coming back to? A simple hardcover, lined paged book from office depot. The hard cover because it stands up to months in a sweaty gym bag.

All I do is write in the date, how much I weigh and how I feel. Then I write my exercises down the sides and list my poundage’s something like this:

Squats - 135 x 10 | 185 x 8 | 225 x 6
Dips - Bodyweight x 15 | 90 x 12 | 135 x 8

Something like that. Pretty simple and uncomplicated I know, but that’s all you need. Most often I get two workouts on a page. I have rows of past training books on my shelf. I can always go back and check them to see where I made the most progress.

Really though, the bottom line is write it however you want, because this whole fitness game is your personal experience and you should do it how you want to in order to make it fun and personal.

As far as Muscle Milk goes, I like it just as much as any other protein powder. No more, no less. I use protein powder only to fill the holes when I’m lacking in solid protein sources or I hit a lazy day where I just cant eat another chicken breast.

As far as mixing it with milk goes, I don’t. There is nothing wrong with mixing it with milk but milk smoothes me out, even skim milk and I don’t mind the taste with water. So its personal and again, if you hate the taste of it without milk and you don’t want to drink it, then you probably wont. That wont help you build muscle will it! So if milk does it for you, then go for it and just remember to count the calories from the milk too.

As far as asking questions goes, I appreciate your consideration of my feelings! That’s very nice to see and I really do appreciate it. Guys like you with polite, humble spirits are the guys that should be sporting awesome bodies with ripped six packs. Anyway…Just put “*******” in there, because no matter what it is you are going to ask me, I will answer it to help you achieve your goals while on my program.

Now go get at it, I can tell you are going to be a success.
